Tim Burton en 10 albums

Qu’il tourne en prises de vues réelles ou en stop motion, Tim Burton a construit en plus de trente ans un monde cinématographique où le merveilleux poétique côtoie le gothique et l’humour macabre. À quelques exceptions près, c’est le compositeur Danny Elfman qui l’a épaulé dans cette aventure, formant un duo symbiotique : sans les images de Burton, la musique de Elfman n’aurait pas la même saveur et vice versa, ce qu’ils ont encore prouvé en 2019 avec le bouleversant “Dumbo”.

Danny Elfman - La Planète des singes (2001)
Après des années 1990 à la fois houleuse (la brouille des deux hommes après L’Étrange Noël de Monsieur Jack, conduisit à l’éviction d'Elfman sur Ed Wood) et miraculeuse (Mars Attacks !, Sleepy Hollow), Tim Burton et Danny Elfman prennent leur rythme de croisière au début du XXIe siècle. Mais « croisière » ne signifie pas forcément calme et volupté, comme le prouvent ce film et sa musique si percussive et puissante. Rappelons à ce propos qu'Elfman vécut plus d’un an en Afrique de l’Ouest dans les années 1970, où il s’est pris de passion pour les percussions, allant jusqu’à devenir un collectionneur de ce type d’instrument par la suite. Les rythmes herculéens de morceaux comme Main Titles ou The Hunt traduisent la brutalité des singes présentés dans ce film adapté d’un célèbre roman de Pierre Boulle (qui avait déjà fait l’objet d’une adaptation en 1968 sur une musique mémorablement dissonante de Jerry Goldsmith). Tout dans cette BO d'Elfman respire l’oppression, ainsi que, une fois n’est pas coutume, une absence totale de second degré. Même si, au final, elles sont très différentes, cette BO et celle de Goldsmith ont un point commun : une certaine âpreté musicale, rehaussée par une recherche passionnante sur les timbres percussifs.

Danny Elfman - Alice au pays des merveilles (2010)
2010 a beau marquer les 25 ans de leur collaboration, Tim Burton et Danny Elfman ne se lassent pas de développer les mêmes thèmes étranges, délirants et poétiques, sans que cela ne sonne comme des tics ou des recettes usées. Adapté de Lewis Carroll et du dessin animé psychédélique de Walt Disney (1951), ce film avec Johnny Depp et Helena Bonham Carter combine prises de vues réelle et animation. Dès la première plage, on reconnaît la marque de fabrique du compositeur puisque c’est un chœur d’enfants qui attaque le Alice Theme, accompagné d’un orchestre à la fois lyrique et rythmé. Cependant, il y a une petite nuance dans la formule puisque le chœur en question est cette fois-ci pourvu de paroles, ponctuant notamment le morceau de « Alice, please Alice » comme une litanie. Le reste de la BO n’est sans doute pas à la hauteur de ce petit chef-d’œuvre, mais il comporte de nombreuses plages passionnantes, qu’elles soient épiques (Alice and Bayard's Journey), inquiétantes (Doors) ou tendres (Proposal/Down the Hole).

Danny Elfman - Frankenweenie (2012)
« Nous aimions tous les films d'horreur d’antan. Son idole était Vincent Price, la mienne était Peter Lorre. En quelque sorte, cela nous a définis pour les trente années qui ont suivi : des âmes damnées torturées par un cerveau diabolique, toutes deux incomprises. » C'est ainsi que Danny Elfman décrivait les liens qui l’unissent à Tim Burton. Certes, Frankenweenie n’est pas un film d’horreur à proprement parler, mais la référence principale de ce film réalisé en stop motion est bel et bien un classique du genre : Frankenstein. Le jeune Victor n'accepte pas la mort brutale de son chien Sparky, écrasé par une voiture. Dans son laboratoire secret, il tente de le ramener à la vie. L'opération réussit mais l’apparence de Sparky est devenue monstrueuse, créant la panique dans le voisinage. Après un générique (Main Titles) dépeignant la triste routine du cadre de vie de Victor (ce que traduit notamment une valse courte en introduction), la partition devient rapidement inquiétante, voire horrifique. Parmi les moments les plus grandioses de la BO, citons Making Monsters et Getting Ready (dominés par des cuivres puissants et un orgue colossal). Elfman jongle sans cesse entre le premier et le second degré dans cette partition remplie d’hommages à Bernard Herrmann et Franz Waxman, deux de ses idoles. Mais même dans le clin d’œil, on sent qu’il prend tout cela très au sérieux, un peu à la manière d’un certain Ed Wood – avec le talent en plus ! À noter que ce film est une nouvelle version du court-métrage réalisé en images réelles par Tim Burton en 1984 (musique de David Newman).

Danny Elfman - Big Eyes (2015)
Le film raconte la vie de la peintre Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), dont le mari Walter (Christoph Waltz) décida de s'approprier frauduleusement la paternité de ses œuvres, des tableaux représentant des enfants malheureux aux yeux disproportionnés. Avec ce biopic féministe réalisé avec classicisme et réalisme, Tim Burton change donc son fusil d’épaule en matière de style, et son compositeur prend le même chemin. Ici, pas de rythmes frénétiques, de chœurs féériques, ni de carillons merveilleux, mais des thèmes tendres et énigmatiques dans lesquels le piano a une place de choix (Who’s the Artist ?, Margaret). Celui-ci est souvent soutenu par une formation de cordes, une rythmique discrète, et surtout un marimba. Il se trouve que le bout des baguettes servant à frapper les lames en bois de ce xylophone africain est aussi globuleux que les grands yeux des toiles de Keane. Est-ce pour cette raison que le compositeur utilisa, consciemment ou non, cet instrument ? Toujours est-il qu’il s’accorde à merveille avec le tempérament ambivalent de Margaret, cette femme timide et naïve, désireuse de se battre malgré tout pour sa liberté et son intégrité artistique. Cette BO comprend également deux chansons inédites de Lana Del Rey (Big Eyes et I Can Fly), ainsi que des morceaux jazz préexistants (Cal Tjader, Red Garland Trio…). Ces derniers servent de toiles de fond aux scènes se déroulant dans la boîte où Keane fait connaître « sa » peinture.

Danny Elfman - Dumbo (2019)
Chose suffisamment rare pour être soulignée : pour cette adaptation en images réelles du célèbre dessin animé de Walt Disney datant de 1941, Danny Elfman a pu travailler longtemps en amont, avant même d’avoir lu une seule ligne du scénario. D’où sans doute la richesse et la sophistication du thème de Dumbo, lequel mélange trois sentiments différents : la tristesse, la légèreté et l’héroïsme, les trois qualités qui définissent ce bébé éléphant aux grandes oreilles, qu’on a arraché à sa mère (Dumbo’s Theme). Les autres morceaux symphoniques de la BO oscillent sans cesse entre lyrisme (Soaring Suite, Colette’s Theme) et action (Nightmare Action). L’histoire de Dumbo se passant dans un cirque puis un parc d’attractions, la BO comprend également de nombreuses musiques de source. Certes, ce n’est pas la première fois que le compositeur s’attaque à la musique de cirque, mais il n’avait jamais poussé la recherche aussi loin. On pourra donc se délecter de fanfares étincelantes ou bien de thèmes modestes à trois temps, joués par un orgue de barbarie (Clowns, Carnival Music…). Le score inclut enfin une nouvelle version de la chanson qui figurait dans le dessin animé de 1941, Baby Mine, interprétée ici par l’actrice Sharon Rooney, ainsi que par Arcade Fire pour le générique de fin.
