Il y a un demi-siècle, le saxophoniste américain s’éclipsait à seulement 40 ans, laissant derrière lui de nombreux enregistrements qui ont chamboulé l’histoire de son instrument, celle du jazz mais aussi de la musique du XXe siècle.
Malgré la fatigue croissante, John Coltrane restera très actif au cours des derniers mois de sa vie, enregistrant en quartet puis en duo avec le batteur Rashied Ali pour ce qui restera comme sa musique la plus extrême et qui paraîtra après sa mort sur Interstellar Space, du free pur publié en 1974… Enregistré en février et mars 1967, Expression, le dernier disque dont il assurera la supervision et qui sortira deux mois après sa mort, réunit Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison et Rashied Ali. C’est un Coltrane mentalement ailleurs mais qui conserve encore de solides liens avec la tradition, et ce même dans les passages les plus intenses. Quelques concerts suivront parmi lesquels ceux de l’Olatunji Center of African Culture d’Harlem fin avril et du 7 mai à Baltimore, sa dernière prestation live. Le cancer qui attaque son foie ne le lâche alors plus et John Coltrane, qui refuse tout traitement, s’éteint le 17 juillet 1967…
