Vreid

Norwegian black metallers Vreid ("wrath," in their native tongue) emerged out of the embers of the critically acclaimed Windir, after that group's leader and chief songwriter, Terje "Valfar" Bakken, perished in a snowstorm while hiking across the remote countryside of his native Sogndal. Debuting in 2004 with Kraft, Vreid has remained at the forefront of the Norwegian black metal scene, issuing high concept albums like I Krig (2007), Milorg (2009), Sólverv (2015), and Wild North West (2021) that pair heavy and melodic extreme Norse metal with historically inspired lyrics. Unwilling to appropriate the Windir name without their fallen comrade or even continue along that group's folk-inspired black metal trail themselves, its surviving musicians, Sture Dingsøyr (vocals, guitar), Stian "Strom" Bakketeig (guitar), Jarle "Hváll" Kvåle (bass), and Jørn "Steingrim" Holen (drums) chose to start fresh instead. Vreid issued their first full-length effort, Kraft, in 2004, followed by Pitch Black Brigade in 2006, and I Krig in 2007, the latter of which, along with its 2009 companion piece Milorg, were conceptual affairs concerning the resistance and liberation of Norway during World War II. Subsequent efforts like V (2011), Welcome Farewell (2013), Sólverv (2015), Lifehunger (2018), and Wild North West (2021) continued to explore historical themes, as well as a wide gamut of black metal styles, ranging from primitive blackened thrash to experimental atmospherics typically found at the other end of the genre's avant-garde.
