Victims

Swedish D-beat/hardcore quartet Victims ply a vicious, crusty, brutal sound that has made them underground favorites for over two decades. After multiple releases on labels such as Havoc, Tankcrimes, and Deathwish, they signed to Relapse in 2019 for their seventh studio album, The Horse and Sparrow Theory. Victims were formed in Nyköping in 1997 by Johan Eriksson (vocals), Marcus Strandberg (guitar), Andy Söderström (bass), and Andy Henriksson (drums). They were influenced by Discharge, Motörhead, and '80s U.S. hardcore. The band quickly recorded a demo, which was officially released in 1999 as their debut EP, Harder Than It Was Meant to Be. After the release of their debut full-length album, Neverendinglasting, in 2001 on Yellow Dog, Strandberg left the band and was replaced by Jon Lindqvist. In Blood followed in 2004 and Divide and Conquer in 2006, both on Havoc. After those releases, Söderström quit and Eriksson doubled up on bass. Their first three albums were notably produced by the late Mieszko Talarczyk of Nasum. Following the 2008 release of Victims' fourth album, Killer, on Deathwish, British guitarist Gareth Smith (ex-Raging Speedhorn) joined the band. 2011's A Dissident and 2016's Sirens, on Tankcrimes, were the group's most polished albums to date. With each release, they strove to push the D-beat template a little further, adding more melody, atmosphere, solos, and other metal elements, while their lyrics tackled political issues from a personal standpoint. In between their main albums, they also released several EPs and a number of split releases with bands such as Acursed, Kylesa, and From Ashes Rise. In 2019, Victims signed to genre stalwarts Relapse for the release of their seventh studio album, The Horse and Sparrow Theory.
