Trio Gaspard

Trio Gaspard, based in Berlin, signed with the Chandos label in the early 2020s and plans to record a complete cycle of Haydn's piano trios. The group also has a strong commitment to contemporary music. Trio Gaspard was formed in 2010. The group's members since its inception have been violinist Jonian Ilias Kadesha, cellist Vashti Hunter, and pianist Nicholas Rimmer. All three members maintain vigorous solo careers. Trio Gaspard studied at the European Chamber Music Academy, where their teachers included violinist and experienced chamber music instructor Johannes Meissl (of the Artis Quartett), pianist Ferenc Rados, and the late violinist Peter Cropper (Lindsay Quartet). Trio Gaspard gained attention with several major prizes early in its career, including the Joseph Joachim Chamber Music Competition in Weimar, the Fifth International Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, and the 17th International Chamber Music Competition in Illzach, France. In 2012, the trio was awarded the Wiener Klassik Preis of the city of Baden in Austria. Trio Gaspard has performed at top venues, including Wigmore Hall in London, the Schlosstheater of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, and the Salle Molière in Lyon, France. The group has also been heard on the SWR (Southwest German Radio) network, on ORF (Austrian Radio), and on Korean radio and television. In addition to traditional piano trio repertory, including Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Op. 56, Trio Gaspard has championed contemporary music and unusual works more generally. In 2017, the trio performed a new work by composer Gareth Williams at the Belfast Music Society in a concert heard live on BBC radio. Trio Gaspard also plays the uncommon Présence-Ballet Blanc for piano trio and speaker by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, accompanied by dancer Luka Fritsch. The trio's performance of the Zimmermann work was recorded live at the Boulez Saal in Berlin and released on the group's Live in Berlin album in 2020. The following year, Trio Gaspard was signed to the Chandos label, and in 2022, the group backed soprano Katharina Konradi on the album Russian Roots. That year, Trio Gaspard was preparing to release the first album in a cycle on Chandos of all 46 Haydn piano trios.
