Trio Casals

The New York-based Trio Casals is noted for programs that combine traditional piano trio repertory with contemporary American music. The group has released multiple albums on the Navona Records label. Trio Casals made its debut at the Pablo Casals Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The members are violinist Alexandr Kislitsyn, cellist Ovidiu Marinescu, and pianist Anna Kislitsyna. All three members have internationally recognized careers as soloists. The group itself has appeared internationally, mounting tours of Romania and China and performing in such prestigious halls as the Holywell Room in Oxford, England, and the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in Russia. In the U.S., Trio Casals has appeared at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia and regularly at Weill Hall in New York's Carnegie Hall since making its debut at the latter in 2016. It has performed in several states along the U.S. eastern seaboard and has appeared with the Helena Symphony in Montana and the Southeast Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Op. 56. Trio Casals also collaborated with the Nashville Ballet in a weeklong residency. The group began its association with Navona Records in 2015, releasing the album Moto Continuo: New Works for Piano Trio and Solo Cello. The programming of Trio Casals is notable for combining 19th century trio repertory with modern American works, of which more than 30 are in its repertory, including trios by George Rochberg, Hilary Tann, and Paul Schoenfield. Composers such as Joanna Estelle, Clive Muncaster, and David Nisbet Stewart have written works expressly for the trio. The group also often performs trio arrangements of the tango-classical fusions of Astor Piazzolla. The recordings of Trio Casals have been oriented mostly toward contemporary music, with Navona's Moto series (which concluded with Moto Finale in 2021) comprising world premieres by composers, including Marinescu. A new series began with A Grand Journey in 2021, also featuring new music, and continued with A Grand Journey, Vol. 2, in 2023. The following year, Trio Casals appeared with other groups on the album Jan Järvlepp: Sonis and Other Tonix.
