The Chapel Choir of Pembroke College, Cambridge

In addition to its liturgical duties at Pembroke College, Cambridge, the Pembroke College Chapel Choir cultivates a broad range of concert endeavors and outreach efforts. The group has toured as far afield as Zambia and Shenzhen, China. Choral music has been heard at the Pembroke College Chapel ever since its founding in 1665 by the architect Christopher Wren, whose uncle, Matthew Wren, had been held in the Tower of London by Oliver Cromwell and resolved, if he were ever released, to provide Pembroke with a chapel of its own and commissioned his nephew to do the job. Names of choristers can be seen in the wooden singers' desks in the chapel. The choir has always been responsible for providing music for daily services in the chapel, and it has sung end-of-term concerts like many other collegiate choirs. Since the appointment of 21-year-old Anna Lapwood as Director of Music in 2016, the choir has dramatically expanded its activities, performing concerts, touring as far afield as Zambia and China, doing outreach work in London, and even collaborating with pop artists. Signed to the Signum Classics label, the choir released its debut album, All Things Are Quite Silent, in 2020. At Pembroke College, the choir has sung major works with orchestral accompaniment, including Bach's Magnificat, BWV 243, Fauré's Requiem, and Vivaldi's Gloria, RV 589. The Chapel Choir of Pembroke College has instituted a program in which it travels every three years to Lusaka, Zambia, not only giving performances but also training Zambian choir directors in workshops. Other destinations include Thailand, Perth, Australia, and Shenzhen and Shanghai in China. Closer to home, the group performs concerts not only at Cambridge but also, once per term, at the church of St. Martin in the Fields in London. It works with the university's Pembroke House, seeking to bring musical opportunities to youth who might not otherwise encounter top-flight choral music. The Chapel Choir of Pembroke College has appeared with actor and singer Eric Idle and with the Swingle Singers jazz vocal group. The choir returned on recordings, joined by the Pembroke College Girls' Choir, with the album A Pembroke Christmas in 2022.
