Steven Vanhauwaert
Pianist Steven Vanhauwaert gravitates toward little-known repertory in his performances and recordings. He is also a significant educator.
Vanhauwaert was born in Belgium. His parents exposed him to the piano but were not musicians, and he experimented with the instrument on his own before beginning lessons at age eight. Vanhauwaert attended the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, earning bachelor's and master's degrees there and completing his studies in 2004. At that point, he was offered a full scholarship at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for a second master's degree. He studied with Kevin FitzGerald, James Bonn, and John Perry, graduating in 2007. Vanhauwaert had planned to stay in the U.S. only for a few years, but he met his future wife in southern California and settled there, beginning to develop an international career as a performer. He speaks Dutch, French, English, German, Bulgarian, and some Russian. Vanhauwaert made his recording debut in 2013, joining pianist Danny Holt as 4HandsLA; they released the album Paris 1913. In 2015, he appeared on the Sonarti album Joseph Woelfl: The Paris Years with harpist Kyunghee Kim-Sutre and violinist Guillaume Sutre.
Vanhauwaert has toured widely, giving solo recitals at such prestigious venues as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Concertgebouw in Bruges, Belgium, and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. His concerto credits include appearances with the Flemish Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Lviv Philharmonic in Ukraine, and Sinfonietta Sofia. Vanhauwaert often programs unusual repertory such as the Cello Sonata in C minor of Camillo Schumann (1872-1946). He has played chamber music as part of the Felici Piano Trio and with other collaborators. In 2020, he appeared on the ECM album Tigran Mansurian: Con Anima. In 2022, he joined the faculty of the University of Utah as an assistant professor. The following year, on the Olde Focus label, he backed violinist Andrew McIntosh on fortepiano on an album of violin-and-piano sonatas by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.
