Sarah Beth Briggs

British pianist Sarah Beth Briggs has been active as a chamber musician, recitalist, educator, soloist, and recording artist. Her experience in the first of these is especially broad; she participated in three different chamber groups at the same time in the late 2010s, and has been a member of several others. Briggs was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on June 2, 1972. Something of a prodigy, she became a finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition when she was 11 and won a Dame Myra Hess Award the same year. A joint winner showing in the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg attracted the attention of top-notch teachers, including performer-scholar Denis Matthews, whom she followed to several different cities. Her education continued in Switzerland with Edith Fischer, a student of Claudio Arrau, and in the chamber music field with Italian violist Bruno Giuranna. Chamber music began to figure heavily in her career early on. Briggs emerged as a leader in 2000 when she co-founded the Trio Melzi, remaining a member of the group until 2016. She has had a longstanding piano duet partnership with James Lisney and has led the Anton Stadler Trio (named for the dedicatee of Mozart's clarinet music and consisting of Janet Hilton on clarinet and Robin Ireland on viola), the clarinet-bassoon-piano trio Clarion3 (with Hilton and bassoonist Laurence Perkins), and a duo with Hilton. Briggs has appeared widely in Britain, continental Europe, and the U.S. as a recitalist, and in this capacity she is noted for giving spoken introductions to the program instead of maintaining a wall between the performer and the audience. She has performed concertos with major ensembles including the London Philharmonic, the Hallé Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, to mention just a few. Her repertoire has focused on mainstream works from Haydn to Bartók but has not foregone contemporary composers such as Alan Rawsthorne and Hans Gál, whose Piano Concerto she recorded for Avie in 2016. Briggs has also recorded several albums for the Semaphore label, and she issued a recital of works by Schumann on Avie in 2019. She has taught keyboard at the University of York and given master classes in piano and chamber music in many countries.
