Roberto Prosseda

Roberto Prosseda is an Italian pianist and musicologist known for rediscovering lesser-known works from the Romantic era. Also a prolific recording artist, he recorded the complete piano music of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Petrassi, and Dallapiccola. He was born in 1975, in Latina, Italy, and he began playing the piano when he was very young. At four years old, he composed his first pieces for piano, and he began taking piano lessons around 1981. From 1985 to 1994 he studied with Ann Maria Martinelli at the Conservatorio Ottorino Respighi. Following his graduation, he travelled to Imola where he attended the Accademia Pianistica under the guidance of Franco Scala, Alexander Lonquich, and Boris Petrushansky. Later, Prosseda sought further refinement at the International Piano Foundation, where he was taught by Dmitry Bashkirov, Leon Fleisher, and several others. With the initial focus on presenting unknown and forgotten repertoire, he made his recording debut in 2000 with the album Goffredo Petrassi: Complete Piano Works. He also released Luigi Dallapiccola: Complete Piano Works in 2003, Mendelssohn Discoveries: Rare Piano Works in 2006, and the 2007 album Mendelssohn Rarities. Two years later, he founded the Mendelssohn Association to continue his efforts of locating and recording Mendelssohn’s lost and unpublished works, and he released the first recording of Mendelssohn’s unpublished Piano Concerto No. 3. In a slight change of direction, Prosseda began performing on the pedal piano in 2011, and gave modern premieres of works by Charles Gounod, Charles-Valentin Alkan, and several contemporary composers. He released Romantic Piano Concerto, Vol. 62: Gounod - The Complete Works for Pedal Piano & Orchestra in 2013, and Mendelssohn: Complete Piano Works in 2017. Additionally, he appeared on several other recordings of the music of Mozart, Gounod, and Mendelssohn in the 2010s. Prosseda has since appeared on Mendelssohn: Violin Sonatas, Ennio Moriccone: Piano Music, and his 2023 release Mozart: Complete Piano Variations. He resides in Italy with his wife Alessandra Ammara, and they also collaborate as the Ammara & Prosseda piano duo.
