Pacho Flores

The music of trumpeter Pacho Flores encompasses classical, jazz, and popular influences. He has recorded several albums for the Deutsche Grammophon label. Flores was born in San Cristóbal, Venezuela, in 1981. His father, Francisco Flores Díaz, was a trumpeter and band director who observed that his son had "good lips" and correctly forecasted that he, too, would become a trumpeter. After lessons from his father, Flores entered Venzuela's famed El Sistema music education system. He studied at the Escuela de Música Miguel Ángel Espinel in San Cristóbal with Orlando Paredes and at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales in Caracas. Flores then traveled to Paris, where he studied with Eric Aubier and won several major trumpet competitions, including the prestigious Maurice André Competition in 2006. Signed to Deutsche Grammophon, he released his debut album, Cantar, in 2012. Like most of his albums to come, the album mixed established classical trumpet works with pieces of Latin American origin. Flores has appeared internationally with such orchestras as the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan, the Düsseldorf Symphony in Germany, and the Arctic Philharmonic in Norway. He has performed at such top venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and Opera City in Tokyo. Flores is also a chamber player, having founded the Simón Bolívar Brass Quintet and leading it on tour in Europe, Japan, and the U.S., as well as in South America. He is an experienced orchestral trumpeter, having held principal trumpet positions with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, the Saito Kinen Orchestra from Japan, and the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Flores has recorded several more albums for Deutsche Grammophon, including Estirpe (2022), containing the Concerto Venezolano of jazz trumpeter Paquito D'Rivera; that work won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Composition in 2023. He has premiered works by various contemporary composers, including Roger Boutry, Efraín Oscher, Sergio Bernal, Giancarlo Castro, and Santiago Báez. Flores is the founding director of Venezuela's Latin-American Trumpet Academy.
