Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra

The Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra is a major regional Brazilian ensemble. The group has made several recordings and has been heard well beyond its home area. The Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra (Portuguese: Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais) was formed in 2008 in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Brazil's Minas Gerais state in the southeastern part of the country. The orchestra made its debut on February 21 of that year with a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 ("Choral"), with Fabio Mechetti conducting; he remains the principal conductor and artistic director, and José Soares is the assistant conductor. The orchestra was organized by the Minas Gerais state government with the aim of raising the region's profile in the classical music world. The Minas Gerais Philharmonic consists of about 90 musicians from the region as well as other parts of Brazil and other countries. Winning several Brazilian classical music industry awards in its first years, the orchestra released several albums devoted to the guitar music of Villa-Lobos in the mid-2010s with guitarist Andrea Bissoli. These were released on the Naxos label, where the orchestra has continued to record. The group made an impact beyond Minas Gerais early in its career, appearing in 2011 in the municipal theaters of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and touring Argentina and Uruguay the following year. In 2015, the Minas Gerais Philharmonic moved into the new Sala Minas Gerais concert hall, expressly designed for symphonic music. The orchestra performs an annual series there, also appearing in open-air concerts in Belo Horizonte and in smaller cities around the state. The orchestra has given concerts in more than 45 Brazilian cities and has played host to international-caliber soloists, including violinist Joshua Bell, pianist Nelson Freire, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein. By 2023, when the Minas Gerais Philharmonic issued an album of overtures and preludes by Carlos Gomes, the orchestra had released six albums on Naxos, all of them devoted to Brazilian music.
