Marcantonio Barone

Pianist Marcantonio Barone is a specialist in contemporary music who has premiered works by George Rochberg and others and has appeared twice in the Bridge label's series, recording the complete works of George Crumb. He is also an important educator. Barone was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in 1962 and has spent much of his life in the Philadelphia area. As a child, he took lessons at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music from Harriet Elsom Rothstein and Taylor Redden, and at ten, he appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra at a children's concert. Barone earned a bachelor's degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where his teacher was Eleanor Sokoloff. He went on to the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, studying with Leon Fleisher and Leonard Shure and earning an Artist Diploma. He also took lessons privately with Susan Starr. Prizes at the 1985 Busoni and 1987 Leeds International Piano Competitions helped Barone launch an international career, and in the 1980s and '90s, he appeared as soloist with a variety of major ensembles at home and abroad, including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, and, in 1990, the Philadelphia Orchestra as a full-fledged attraction on its subscription series. Barone has a flourishing career as a recitalist as well, having performed at the Metropolitan Museum and Weill Recital Hall in New York, at Wigmore Hall in London, and at the Large Hall of the Saint Petersburg Filarmoniya, among other venues. He made his recording debut in 2012 with violinist Barbara Govatos, recording Beethoven's complete violin sonatas in a box set for the Bridge label. An enthusiastic chamber music player, Barone has often appeared with such groups as the Lenape Chamber Ensemble and 1807 and Friends. He has tended increasingly often to perform contemporary music and has premiered works by composers, including Rochberg, David Finko, and Gerald Levinson. Barone is on the faculty at Swarthmore College and his alma mater, the Bryn Mawr Conservatory; at the latter, he is head of the piano department. In 2020 and 2021, he released recordings of Crumb's Metamorphoses, Books I and II, on Bridge.
