London Choral Sinfonia

The London Choral Sinfonia, as the name promises, is a choral-orchestral ensemble. The group has made several recordings for the Orchid Classics label. The London Choral Sinfonia was founded in 2015 by conductor Michael Waldron, who had led several other choral ensembles and guest-conducted a variety of orchestras; he wanted to establish a small choral-orchestral group that could perform both early music and contemporary works. The London Choral Sinfonia has indeed often programmed music from those periods but has also added established Classical- and Romantic-era choral works to its repertory. The ensemble began its concert schedule with an appearance at St. Paul's Cathedral in London at an event marking the 50th anniversary of the organization Contact the Elderly. The London Choral Sinfonia does not have a permanent concert home but performs in various venues, often at Cadogan Hall or St. John's Smith Square but also at other halls and churches around London. In 2019, the London Choral Sinfonia made its recording debut, releasing the holiday album O Holy Night on Orchid Classics. Waldron remained the director of the London Choral Sinfonia as of the early 2020s. The group responded creatively to the COVID-19 pandemic, launching an online series of Apéritif Concerts. Those proved so successful that the Sinfonia continued its online program in 2021 with its Rush Hour Recitals, a monthly 30-minute online presentation. In 2021, the London Choral Sinfonia also inaugurated a program of online choral workshops with the AMERICA! Singing Workshop, leading choirs in African American spirituals and music by Samuel Barber and George Gershwin. The workshops feature note-learning by section and singing help and are capped by a concert. The London Choral Sinfonia has continued to record for Orchid Classics, issuing (as of 2022) three volumes of music devoted to composer Richard Pantcheff. The Sinfonia also issued the album Colourise in 2022, featuring a new version of Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending and a hitherto unrecorded work by Lennox Berkeley.
