Kevin Kenner

American pianist Kevin Kenner has had a long association with the music of Chopin, winning acclaim for his performances and recordings in Poland itself. Kenner was born in Coronado, California, on May 19, 1963. He studied there with Polish pianist Krzysztof Brzuza, who sent him to audition with a Warsaw teacher, Ludwik Stefanski, and to enter the 1980 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. He received a special award as the most promising talent. During the upheavals in Poland in the 1980s, Kenner returned to the U.S. to study with Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He went back to Europe for work with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, Germany, and continued his long love affair with Poland. He now divides his time between Krakow and London, teaching at the Royal College of Music in the latter city. Kenner has performed with top-ranked orchestras including the Hallé Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Czech Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony in Japan, and, in his home country, orchestras in St. Paul, Rochester, Kansas City, Baltimore, San Diego, San Francisco, San Diego, and Salt Lake City, among others. He has collaborated with chamber groups including the Belcea Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet. Kenner has recorded music of Ravel, Schumann, Beethoven, and Piazzolla, but perhaps his most characteristic releases have been those devoted to Chopin, beginning in 2004 with an album devoted to the composer's four Scherzos and released, like most of his recordings, by Poland's Dux label. Several of these have included unusual or little-performed works; signed to the Warner Bros. label, Kenner released the 2018 album Late Chopin Works, which included his own completion of the unfinished Mazurka in F minor, Op. 68, No. 4. Kenner has also recorded for the in-house label of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw.
