Kelvin Tan

Kelvin Tan – born Kelvin Tan Wei Lian in Singapore on October 5, 1981 – is a blind Mandopop vocalist best-known as the winner of the first season of Project SuperStar in 2005. Tan, who was born blind, grew up listening to ‘80s Mandopop, which inspired him to learn to play guitar and piano. He attended the Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped and Dunearn Secondary School before pursuing work as a massage therapist. He also spent many hours busking, performing Mandopop ballads accompanied only by his guitar. Tan and four of his blind friends auditioned for the first season of the televised talent contest Project SuperStar, but out of the five, he was the only one that was accepted. He went on to win the contest, which earned him a recording contract. In 2006, Tan released his first album, All I Want Is…, which was a big success. His second album, I-Weilian, was released in 2007. He also released a version of the album in Taiwan, which was his first album to be released in that country. Moving Notes… Kelvin Tan (2009) was his third album and was a critical and commercial success. His 2017 digital album, The Singapore Songbook, was Tan’s tribute to the Mandopop he grew up listening to in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and ‘00s. In 2020, Tan released a Xue Hua Piao Piao remix of “Yi Jian Mei”, a collaboration with American hip-hop artist Nyukyung. The song, a cover of Fei Yu-ching’s 1983 hit, was a big success.
