Joseph Nolan
Organist Joseph Nolan was born in Britain, served as organist at the Chapel Royal St. James's Palace and often performed at Buckingham Palace, and has specialized in core Parisian repertory. He moved to Australia in 2008 to take a job at St. George's Cathedral in Perth.
Nolan was born in Hull, U.K., on May 3, 1974. He studied with Richard Popplewell at the Royal College of Music, London, winning a prize as most promising student and fulfilling the forecast with first-class honors at his final recital. With support from the Royal Philharmonic Society, he furthered his studies with Dame Gillian Weir. While at the Chapel Royal St. James Palace, Nolan gave the first concert on the refurbished organ in the Buckingham Palace Ballroom and was also the first organist to record on the instrument. Both in England and in Australia Nolan has concertized extensively in addition to his liturgical duties. He has appeared solo at the Sydney Opera House and with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in Perth. In 2018 he appeared as soloist in Poulenc's organ concerto with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Petronas Concert Hall in Kuala Lumpur.
After making recordings for the Herald and ASV labels in the early 2000s, Nolan joined the Signum roster with his Organ of Buckingham Palace Ballroom album in 2008. The following year he issued an album devoted to the organ of St. Sulpice, Paris, and since then his recording activities have been devoted mostly to French music. His complete cycle of Charles-Marie Widor's organ symphonies appeared to critical acclaim between 2012 and 2014, and was followed by an album of Widor solo organ works recorded at St. Sernin in Toulouse and St. François de Sales in Lyon. In June of 2017 he performed all ten Widor organ symphonies over seven days in concert in Melbourne. In 2018 Nolan issued Midnight at St. Etienne du Mont, partially inspired by the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris.
Nolan was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016 by France's government for services to French music. He took Australian citizenship in 2012.
