Ismo Eskelinen

Guitarist Ismo Eskelinen has attracted many new listeners to the classical guitar with his appearances on Finnish television. He has emphasized contemporary music in his repertory, giving an unusual number of world premieres. Eskelinen was born in the Finnish lakeside city of Kuopio on August 2, 1971. He studied with guitarists Oscar Ghiglia and Timo Korhonen, and with the pianist Ralf Gothóni, rounding out his education with master classes with the great player and composer Leo Brouwer, among others. Eskelinen won several prizes in his late teens and his 20s, including wins at the Ekenäs Scandinavian Guitar Competition in 1989, the Gargnano competition in 1997, and the Leo Brouwer Competition in 1998. These led to major orchestral bookings with orchestras both within and outside Finland, including the Helsinki Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, and the Nordwest Deutsche Philharmonie. Eskelinen is a frequent guest at summer festivals and has been the first guitarist invited to quite a number of them, including those at Moritzburg, Dresden, and Charlottesville in the U.S. An energetic chamber player, Eskelinen has collaborated with the likes of violinists Pekka Kuusisto and Karen Gomyo. Committed to the performance of contemporary music, Eskelinen has premiered works by composers Einojuhani Rautavaara, Aulis Sallinen, and Kalevi Aho, among others. His focus on contemporary works has not cost him in terms of popular appeal, however, as he appeared weekly for a year on Finnish television, being seen by some 500,000 viewers at each appearance. Eskelinen began his recording career on the Alba label in 2004, with an album of guitar works by Manuel Ponce. He continued to record for Alba through the mid-2010s, issuing albums of music by composers from Bach to Olli Mustonen. He moved to the BIS label in 2018 for an album of music by Sebastian Fagerlund and has recorded several more albums for the label, including Kromos in 2020. He also collaborated with cellist Jan Vogler on the 2019 release Songbook, issued by Sony Classical. In addition to performing, Eskelinen serves as lecturer-in-charge of guitar at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and as the artistic director of the Riihimäki summer concerts and the Sonkajärvi Soi Festival in Finland.
