Higher Power

Leeds-based hardcore band Higher Power have won a sizable following for their hard-hitting, guitar-based sound, which adds atmospheric elements of 1990s alternative rock and a metal-infused guitar attack to their heavier punk sound. On their debut album, 2017's Soul Structure, Higher Power's sound was at its most straightforward, a high-velocity hurricane of guitars and drums, while 2020's 27 Miles Underwater marked a shift to a darker and more artful approach that didn't compromise their commitment to hardcore. With 2024's Absolute Bloom, crisper production and sharper dynamics gave their songs a new punch. Higher Power was formed in 2014 when bassist Jimmy Wizard and his brother, drummer Alex Wizard, left London to settle in Leeds with an eye toward forming a band. Inspired by the sound of bands like Subzero, Leeway, and Merauder, the brothers began recording a demo, and started recruiting musicians. Louis Hardy and Max Harper came aboard to play guitar, and when they had trouble finding the right vocalist, Jimmy became their lead singer and Ethan Wilkinson signed on to play bass. Taking their name from a track by Subzero, Higher Power started circulating their first demo in February 2015, and the release got them picked up by Neutral Words Records, which released their debut EP, Space to Breathe, six months later. They were soon playing out regularly in the U.K., and in 2016 they made their first appearances in America, staging a handful of shows on the East Coast. Their debut full-length, Soul Structure, arrived in May 2017, accompanied by a string of live dates in America, while international touring occupied them for the next two years. The group was signed to Roadrunner, which released their sophomore album, 27 Miles Underwater, in 2020; it was produced by Gil Norton, who previously worked with the Pixies, the Foo Fighters, and Feeder. In 2021, Louis Hardy dropped out of the group, and Jimmy Wizard took over on guitar for studio sessions, while Joe Williams of the band Big Cheese handled Hardy's parts on tour. In 2022, Hardy came back to the band, and they began work on their third album. 2024's Absolute Bloom was Higher Power's first release under a new deal with the revered heavy metal label Nuclear Blast.
