El Bebeto

El Bebeto is an award-winning, charting singer of Mexican Regional music from Guasave, Sinaloa. After arriving on the scene at the age of 18 with his 2010 Universal debut Quiero Que Seas Tu, a collection of corridos and romanticos, his crystalline tenor voice and good looks thrust him into the Mexican popular culture limelight and he's remained there ever since. His 2011 single, "Eres Mi Necesidad," placed on six different charts. He scored a smash hit outside his chosen genre with the number two-charting electro-cumbia single "Intento" in collaboration with 3BallMTY and America Sierra in 2012. Bebeto's reputation spread with the release of the singles "Lo Más Interesante" and "No Te So Importante" from his hit 2016 outing No Que No: Banda y Tololoche, which established him in the United States and Central and South America. Bebeto's voice is so emotionally expressive and authoritative in his interpretations he has consistently been able to secure choice material from top composers such as Horacio Palencia, Jesús Omar Tarazón, Gerardo Coronel, and Espinoza Paz. The singer's 2019 album Mi Persona Preferida was entirely composed and produced by the latter. El Bebeto was born Carlos Alberto García Villanueva in Sinaloa in 1989. He began singing at seven, and by 13 he was performing with his father at parties, picnics, and local events. He joined the band Estrella Blanca and remained until he was 16, before he moved to Mexicali, Baja California Norte as part of a band called La Única Estrella, but he left that band shortly thereafter to return home and join Banda Sairú as lead vocalist. He remained with them for four years and met A&R man Jose Serrano during that time; Serrano wanted to sign him as a solo act. Before he could sign, Bebeto's father died suddenly, throwing his entire world into chaos. He decided to quit music and give up his dreams in order to go home, attend school, and be close to his mother and brothers. Serrano was not completely out of the picture, however. Three years later, with assistance from mutual friend and composer Luciano Luna, he secured Bebeto a deal with Universal's Disa. His debut album, Quiero Que Seas Tu, was issued in 2010 and established him at radio and on YouTube. The record was a sleeper but garnered him a hit single with "Eres Mi Necesidad" the following year. Bebeto's fortunes changed after that: he was invited to sing at higher profile events and to tour as an opener for some international acts. In 2012 he hit the charts again as part of a trio with 3BallMTY and America Sierra on the electro cumbia smash "Intento." He won three Billboard awards for the song in "Theme of the Year" "Theme of the Year, Vocal Collaboration," and "Theme of the Year Duranguense/Grupero/Cumbia" in the Mexican Regional category. It was nominated in four categories the following year but didn't win. His second album, Ese Soy Yo, was produced by Luciano Luna and also issued in 2012. Containing cumbias, rancheras, and romanticos, most of its songs were previously unreleased compositions by notable writers including Adrián Pieragostino, Sierra, and Palencia. Its first single, "Corazón de Acero," by Sierra did well at radio and streaming and was succeeded by "Lo Legal." While Bebeto was now able to tour as headliner behind the record, it was his third album, 2014's En Tu Mirada, that put him over the top. It ran up the radio and streaming charts and its singles, "Lo Más Interesante" and "No Te So Importante," netted back-to-back number ones in Mexico. His social media and YouTube profiles exploded and Bebeto became a household name. He was nominated for three Bandamax 2014 awards in the categories "Soloist of the Year," "Video Más Pedido," and "Most Influential Artist in Social Networks." He also collaborated with 3BallMTY on the charting electro single "De las 12 a las 12." He followed the album in 2015 with the mariachi-themed offering Eternamente Mexicano with Sus Banda Patria Chica. Its single "Lo Legal" landed inside the Top 40 at Mexican Regional Songs on the international charts. The following year he dropped the banda album No Que No: Banda y Tololoche. Two of its three singles -- "Como Olvidarte" and "Mente Degenerada" -- made the higher rungs of the Mexican Regional Songs and streaming charts. The album landed inside the Top Ten at Mexican Regional Albums. El Bebeto undertook a year-and-a-half-long tour playing venues across Mexico, Latin America, and the United States, doing radio and press interviews, and singing on television variety shows along the way. Bebeto teamed with Paz for 2019's Mi Persona Preferida. Issued in March, its promotional singles "Seremos" and the title track both placed high on streaming charts across the spectrum and at Mexican Regional Songs.
