Daniel Grossmann

Conductor Daniel Grossmann is the founder, artistic director, and conductor of the Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich. He has also appeared as a guest conductor with both modern-instrument and historical-instrument ensembles. Grossmann was born in Munich in 1978 to parents of Jewish-Hungarian background. He began studying conducting there with Hans-Rudolf Zöbeley. Later, Grossmann traveled to New York to study at the Metropolitan Opera with Scott Bergeson and to Budapest, Hungary, for studies at the Franz Liszt Academy with Ervin Lukács. While in Hungary, he made numerous appearances as a guest conductor with groups such as the historical-instrument ensemble Capella Savaria, the Hungarian Philharmonie Debrecen, and the Budapest Failoni Chamber Orchestra. Grossmann has worked with various top-flight soloists, including vocalist Christoph Prégardien and violinists Daniel Hope and Igor Oistrakh. From 2000 to 2006, Grossmann served as the permanent guest conductor of the Jewish Summer Festival in Budapest. Back in Germany, he formed the Daniel Grossmann Ensemble and made his recording debut with that group in 2005, releasing the album Through Roses, which featured music by Marc Neikrug and Viktor Ullmann. That year, Grossmann founded the Orchester Jakobsplatz München. For the 2018-2019 season, the group's name was changed to Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich; the English name is used in both English-speaking and German-speaking contexts. Grossmann has built the group into an international-caliber ensemble. Its repertory has included works by Jewish composers but is not at all restricted to them. In 2012, Grossmann was awarded the Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum prize by the Bavarian Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts. Grossmann and the orchestra have been associated with the Neos label, issuing albums of music by Iannis Xenakis and John Cage. In 2022, Grossmann led the group in an album of works by Fanny Mendelssohn, including orchestrations of that composer's songs, and Felix Mendelssohn. He remains the conductor and artistic director of the Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich.
