Clément Mao-Takacs

Clément Mao - Takacs is one of the most visible figures among the younger generation of French conductors, with specialties in the music of Kaija Saariaho and music from the period of 1850 to 1950. He is also active as a pianist, composer, scholar, educator, and festival impresario. Mao - Takacs was born in Paris in 1980. He took up conducting very early in his musical career, leading his first concert at age 15 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. He studied conducting at the Paris Conservatory and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. He served at the Budapest Opera as an assistant to Janos Komives from 2001 to 2003, and then in the same position at the Rome Opera with Gianluigi Gelmetti from 2003 to 2008. In 2008, Mao - Takacs won the Prix Jeune Talent of the Fondation del Duca. From 2004 to 2010, he was the music director of the Orchestre Sérénade, and in 2011, he founded the Secession Orchestra, continuing to serve as both the music director and artistic director. With that group, Mao - Takacs gave the premiere in 2014 of Kaija Saariaho's oratorio La Passion de Simone. Mao - Takacs has since become a major specialist in Saariaho's music, also enthusiastically performing works from the period 1850 to 1950 as well as contemporary works, of which he has often been the dedicatee. He has served as a guest conductor with the Orchestre de Bretagne, New York's International Contemporary Ensemble, and other groups. As a pianist, Mao - Takacs has often appeared at festivals including Voix d’Automne, Archipel, and Exposer la musique vivante. He accompanied soprano Omo Bello on a tour of major European venues. Mao - Takacs is a composer who has written mostly for orchestra and for the voice, issuing such works as OPHELIA / sequences & songs. Some of his works are inspired by folk music, poetry, and visual arts. He is the founder of the student festival Ici et Demai as well as other festivals and events, and he programmed chamber music concerts and nuits de poésie at the Amphithéâtre Richelieu at the Sorbonne university. Mao - Takacs has created workshops and events aimed at broadening the public for classical music, including the neighborhood-based Université populaire de la musique. Amidst these activities, he has found time to complete a double doctorate in comparative literature and performing arts. Mao - Takacs has taught history of opera at the University of Lille and is the author of various articles, program notes, and exhibition catalogs. He has appeared on several recordings, and in 2019, he led the Oslo Philharmonic in an album of Saariaho's works.
