Clare Hammond

A specialist in contemporary music, Polish music, and neglected repertory, pianist Clare Hammond has given world premieres of many new works. Hammond records for the BIS label. Hammond was born in London in 1985 and grew up in Nottingham. She attended Nottingham Girls' High School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where she received a "double first," two first-place honors. She went on further studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Ronan O'Hara and also took a DMA degree at the City University of London, writing a thesis on piano concertos for the left hand. In the 2011 film Hysteria, she played a piano teacher, and she was the hand double in piano scenes for actress Felicity Jones; she returned to the screen in 2015 in The Lady in the Van, also performing on the film's soundtrack. Hammond has performed across Britain and continental Europe in concertos with leading orchestras, including the Liverpool Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, and BBC Symphony. Her recital credits include an appearance at London's Wigmore Hall. Hammond is known for her specialties in contemporary and Polish music, and she has toured Poland several times. Those interests coincided when Hammond was widely publicized for her participation in the 2014 Andrzej Panufnik Centenary Celebration, and she then recorded Reflections: The Solo Piano Music of Andrzej and Roxanna Panufnik as her debut release on BIS. Hammond has premiered works by composers, including Kenneth Hesketh, David Matthews, and Robert Saxton. An enthusiastic chamber player, she has collaborated with the Brodsky, Endellion, and Dante Quartets, among many other groups. Hammond has continued to record for BIS, with five albums to her credit as of the early 2020s, including Variations (2021), and also albums of music by Hesketh and Saxton, the latter on an album released on Toccata Classics. She has also recorded for Signum Classics (The Art of Dancing, 2018). In a partnership with Gloucestershire Music, Hammond gives recitals in schools and has performed for more than 5,000 young students.
