Christian Svarfvar

Violinist Christian Svarfvar is among Scandinavia's most highly regarded musicians. He often programs contemporary music and has collaborated with composers in a wide variety of styles. Svarfvar was born in 1982 in Sweden. His father, Sven-Ole Svarfvar, was a former concertmaster of the Norwegian Opera and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and his mother was also a violin teacher; his sister is also a concert violinist. Svarfvar had his first lessons in the Suzuki method, soon supplanted by those from his father, and by 12, he was performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Svarfvar dropped out of a conventional high school to attend Stockholm's Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 2002. He went on to the Juilliard School in New York, studying with Robert Mann and earning a degree in 2005. Rising star prizes from the Stockholm Concert Hall and the European Concert Hall Organization in 2008 helped him land soloist slots at such halls as Vienna's Musikverein, the Luxembourg Philharmonie, and the Kölner Philharmonie. Svarfvar was interested in contemporary music from early in his career. In 2007, he joined the contemporary music ensemble NNEO, performing between then and 2013 in more than 100 premieres. He has continued to stress contemporary music, working with such composers as Kaija Saariaho, Chaya Czernowin, and Howard Shore. Svarfvar gave the premiere of Shore's violin concerto Eastern Promises with Sweden's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with Shore conducting. In 2014, Svarfvar made his solo recording debut on the Sterling label with an album of Grieg violin sonatas with pianist Helge Kjekshus. He later moved to the BIS label and recorded several albums, including the French violin-and-piano music recital Après un rêve (2016). Svarfvar has gone on to perform as a soloist with most major orchestras in Sweden and many beyond, including the London Philharmonic, the Istanbul Philharmonic, and the Simon Bolívar Symphony in Venezuela. His recital career includes a sold-out appearance at New York's Carnegie Hall in the venue's Distinctive Debuts series. He has also appeared as a recitalist at such halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Cité de la musique in Paris, and the Musikverein in Vienna. In 2018, Svarfvar changed labels once again, issuing the Bruch and Stenhammar violin concertos on Rubicon Classics with the London Philharmonic. He returned in 2021 with the album Johan Ullén: Infinite Bach.
