Canyon City

Artist and producer Paul Johnson, who operates under the moniker Canyon City, emerged in 2015 with a sound that pairs conversational storytelling with hushed and elegantly cinematic indie folk. Based out of Nashville, Johnson issued a string of EPs ahead of his debut full-length effort, 2016's Midnight Waves. A native of Fargo, North Dakota, Johnson relocated to Music City to attend college at Belmont University, and quickly immersed himself in the folk and indie scene, playing house shows and honing his distinctive sound. Using the nom de plume Canyon City, he released his first collections of material, a pair of EPs titled Flicker a Light and Refuge, in 2015, with a third EP, Smoke & Ash, arriving in 2016. Later that year Johnson released his first long-player, Midnight Waves, followed by Constellation in 2017. By the time of the arrival of 2019's Bluebird, Johnson had amassed combined online streams of over 100 million, with his narrative-driven, textural alt-folk sound drawing comparisons to contemporaries like Gregory Alan Isakov, the Tallest Man on Earth, and Noah Gundersen. In 2020, Johnson released the homespun EP Circling the Sun.
