Black Oak Ensemble

The Black Oak Ensemble is building a reputation as a major American chamber group with innovative recordings and a strong commitment to contemporary music. The ensemble has commissioned several new works and collaborated with a variety of forward-looking musicians. The Black Oak Ensemble was founded in 2015. Its members are violinist Desirée Ruhstrat, cellist David Cunliffe, and violist Aurélien Fort Pederzoli. All of the members have independent careers; Ruhstrat and Cunliffe are members of the Lincoln Quartet, and Pederzoli is a founding member of the Spektral Quartet. Ruhstrat and Cunliffe live together, and in the yard of their house is a black oak tree, characteristic of Illinois. The trio made a major splash in 2019 with the release of its Silenced Voices album on the Cedille Records label. Inspired partly by the work of Pederzoli's mother, a tour guide expert in European Jewish sites related to the Holocaust, the members located forgotten works by promising Jewish composers in bookstores and premiered them. All but one of the composers featured died in the Holocaust. That album opened doors for the Black Oak Ensemble in the U.S. and Europe. The trio has performed at the Ravinia Festival, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Chicago Cultural Center, among other U.S. venues, and at Le Festival du film Juif de Paris, the Everlasting Hope festival in Theresienstadt, and L’Alhambra in Vittel, France, on a European tour that encompassed stops in the Netherlands, Greece, France, and the Czech Republic. In performance, the Black Oak Ensemble has collaborated with a range of musicians, including guitarist Mak Grgic, harpsichordist Jory Vinikour, members of the contemporary music group Eighth Blackbird, and flutist Eugenia Molinar. The trio often programs contemporary music and has commissioned new works from such composers as Michael Nyman, David Ludwig, and Conrad Tao, as well as unearthing previously unknown works by the likes of Geza Fríd, Gustave Samazeuilh, and Robert Casadesus. The Black Oak Ensemble has held residences at several American institutions, including the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, and in France, it established the Musique Dans Le Gers festival, oriented toward work with young artists. In 2022, the Black Oak Ensemble released the album Avant l'Orage: French String Trios 1926-1939.
