Baby Rose

With a low, smoky, and arresting voice, R&B singer/songwriter Baby Rose has channeled the emotionally voluminous power of great vocal talents like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. Still in her early twenties when she began her solo music career, Rose brought a weathered and wise energy well beyond her years to her 2019 debut full-length, To Myself. Since appearing on Dreamville's Grammy-nominated Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation in 2020, Rose has issued her atmospheric second album, Through and Through (2023), the first fruit of an association with the Secretly Canadian label. Baby Rose was born Jasmine Rose Wilson in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Raised on a wide variety of musical genres, she was both singing and writing poetry at a young age. A relative gifted her a piano for her ninth birthday, and by the age of 12, her voice had developed to the point where a family friend took notice and encouraged her to take her talent into the recording studio. By then she and her family had relocated to Fayetteville, where she participated in talent competitions and began building a life in music during her teenage years. Baby Rose eventually moved to Atlanta to focus even more intensely on her music. She teamed up with producer Casey Graham for her debut EP, 2017's From Dusk 'Til Dawn, and was recognized by established stars like SZA and J. Cole as an up-and-coming talent. In 2019, shortly after touring in direct support of Ari Lennox, Rose appeared alongside Lennox and Bas on the Dreamville Records compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 upon its release that July. A month later, a licensing deal with major-label Island yielded Baby Rose's first album, To Myself, written in the wake of a breakup. Produced primarily by Tim Maxey, it also contained tracks Rose co-produced with Insightful and Biako. In November, Revenge of the Dreamers III was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Album. Rose performed in the Netherlands, U.K., and U.S. into 2020, after which she studied songwriting through a Berklee College of Music online course. She returned in 2022 on the Secretly Canadian label with the pleading "Go," backed by the undaunted "Fight Club," a collaboration with Georgia Anne Muldrow. Through and Through, the parent release, followed the next year, just after Rose provided Creed III: The Soundtrack with "Heavy Is the Head." Featuring a dreamlike sound offset by some of Rose's most direct storytelling, Through and Through was recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles with contributions from a larger team of fellow producers including Maxey and Biako, along with John Scherer, D. Phelps, and DJ Dahi.
