Alexander Fiterstein

Clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein is a leading figure on the American scene as a chamber player, recitalist, and concerto soloist. He is recognized both for expertise in mainstream repertory and Jewish music. Fiterstein was born in Belarus. His family moved to Israel when he was two, and he was raised in Jerusalem. Later they came to the U.S., and as a teen, Fiterstein studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He went on to the Juilliard School in New York. After graduating, he won the Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in 2001; that landed him performance opportunities in the New York area, and these helped him earn a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Fiterstein has been active as a concerto soloist all over the world, appearing with the Tokyo Philharmonic, the KBS Orchestra of South Korea, and the Danish National Radio Symphony, among other orchestras, as well as with various American groups. He has been a fixture at the most prominent American chamber music venues, including the 92nd Street Y in New York, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and the Music at the Supreme Court series in Washington, D.C. He is a regular performer at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York. Fiterstein has a long list of top chamber music collaborators, including Emanuel Ax, Mitsuko Uchida, and a host of string quartets in the U.S., Israel, and beyond. He founded the "Zimro Project," which promotes chamber music by Jewish composers, and he was invited by conductor Daniel Barenboim to perform as principal clarinetist of the Israeli-Palestinian West-East Divan Orchestra during the early years of that group's existence. He has also been the guest principal clarinetist with the Israel Philharmonic and several other ensembles. Fiterstein has taught at the University of Minnesota and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. Fiterstein has recorded with various chamber groups and also has several recordings under his name. In 2019, he joined New York's Tesla Quartet for Joy & Desolation, a recording on the Orchid Classics label of music by Mozart, Gerald Finzi, John Corigliano, and Carolina Heredia.
