Aimi Kobayashi

One of Japan's most-honored pianists of her generation, Aimi Kobayashi was a veteran of the stage by her early teens. She made the finals of the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition and has joined the roster of the Warner Classics label. Kobayashi was born in Ube, Japan, on September 23, 1995, and took up the piano at three. She remained at home until 2007, studying with Yuko Ninomiya beginning at age eight. By that time, Kobayashi was already making a splash in Japanese national competitions, becoming the youngest-ever winner of the PTNA Piano Competition (she won that contest four times in a row between 2001 and 2004) and of the National Music Competition of Japan in 2005. In 2004, she appeared with the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, and the following year, she gave a recital at the Salle Cortot in Paris that was broadcast in both Europe and Japan. Kobayashi was an international star before entering her teens, appearing at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2005, 2006, and 2008, and making several appearances in concertos during those years in Moscow with conductor Vladimir Spivakov. Kobayashi entered the Toho Gakuen School of Music in 2011, becoming the first student given a full scholarship there, and she won a long list of competitions in Japan. In 2011, she issued an album of Beethoven piano sonatas on the EMI Classics label. When Kobayashi began to add international competition placements to her list of accomplishments, her career took off in earnest. She placed third in the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2012, and made the final round in the rigorous International Chopin Piano Competition, held once every five years, in Warsaw in 2015. Since then, although she plays various kinds of repertoire, she has been regarded as a Chopin specialist. She has appeared with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, the Moscow Philharmonic, and the Royal Philharmonic of Liège, in addition to the major Japanese orchestras. Kobayashi enrolled at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where she is a student of Meng-Chieh Liu. Signing with Warner Classics, she issued an album of solo piano works by Chopin and Liszt in 2018. Kobayashi returned in 2021 with a recording of Chopin's preludes.
