Afiara Quartet

As with many ensembles formed at the beginning of the 21st century, the Afiara String Quartet is enthusiastic about new music that does away with the old definitions of Classical and Popular music. Afiara was formed in 2006 by students at San Francisco State University who knew that being part of a small ensemble was how they wanted to spend their musical careers. First violinist Valerie Li and cellist Adrian Fung were joined by Yuri Cho, second violin, and David Samuel, cello. It was Fung who, by happy accident, named the group. He had been typing an email, using the phrase "a big event, a grand affair," by mistyped "affair" as "afiara." He then learned that "fiar" is Spanish for "to trust," which the members realized applied to making music together. At San Francisco, Afiara studied under the Alexander Quartet. It then studied with the Juilliard String Quartet in New York. Along the way, it began winning prizes in the U.S. and in Canada, which is where several members were born. Its first recording -- music of Mendelssohn and Schubert, released in 2010 -- featured its mentor, the Alexander Quartet. Its second album -- quartets by Beethoven -- featured the original quartet members, but by the time it was self-published in 2014, personnel had changed. In 2013, Timothy Kantor had joined as second violinist and Jessica Chang as violist, then Eric Wong replaced Chang in 2014. It was these four who undertook an intriguing project entitled Spin Cycle. The quartet asked four Canadian composers to write a quartet; its recordings of these quartets were then remixed by DJ Skratch Bastid. Finally, the composers were asked to respond to Skratch Bastid's mixes by creating yet another piece for DJ and quartet together. Spin Cycle was released in 2015 on the Centrediscs label. Brett Abigana, Dan Becker, and Jason Bush have written music for Afiara, and it has also worked with timpanist Louis Siu, singer Kyrie Kristmanson, and composer Patrick Carrabré. Afiara has performed and held residencies at festivals throughout North America and Europe. It is not only committed to new music and style-bending collaborations, it is also committed to education and advocacy, teaching and doing outreach programs when it is able.
