Active Child
The glacially atmospheric, yet soulful, electronic- and choral music-influenced project of musician Pat Grossi, Active Child combines his otherworldly falsetto and harp-playing with '80s new wave and dance-oriented traditions. Grossi debuted to critical praise with his 2011 full-length album, You Are All I See, and gained further exposure touring alongside James Blake and M83. He has continued to garner acclaim with regular festival appearances and equally genre-bending releases, including his neo-soul-infused, 2015 sophomore album Mercy.
Born in 1983 in New Jersey, Grossi was raised in a creative family with a music executive father and abstract painter mother. Early on, he developed a passion for music influenced by his father's love of '80s alternative acts like New Order and Tears for Fears, as well as his own interest in '90s hip-hop. Around age nine, he began singing with the Philadelphia Boys Choir and gained valuable vocal tutoring while performing in Europe, Australia, and South Africa. However, it was during his college years in Colorado that he began to expand his musical vision, taking harp lessons and listening to an ever more eclectic mix of music. He began writing his own songs, bringing together all of his disparate influences. Adopting the stage name Active Child, he debuted in 2010 with an EP, Curtis Lane, for Merok Records. The album's evocative soundscapes caught the attention of bliss and psych-pop outfit School of Seven Bells, who later toured alongside Active Child; they also remixed each other's songs for a split 7".
Active Child's first full-length album, You Are All I See, followed in the summer of 2011 on the Vagrant label. An intimate journey of the highs and lows of relationships and identity, the album cracked the Top 40 of Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart. In 2013, Grossi returned with the Rapor EP, which featured guest appearances from Mikky Ekko and Ellie Goulding. Mercy, Grossi's sophomore long-player under the moniker, dropped in the summer of 2015 and found him further expanding his approach, embracing an emotive, neo-soul-influenced sound. Spending the next few years touring and working on guest spots and remixes, Grossi returned to the studio for his third album. Co-produced by Andrew Sarlo -- who had previously worked with the likes of Bon Iver and Big Thief -- In Another Life arrived in mid-2020 and featured the song "Weightless."
