Neil Young, pépite n°776 544. Avec Young Shakespeare, le Loner exhume un concert renversant enregistré au Shakespeare Theater de Stratford dans le Connecticut le 22 janvier 1971, trois jours, donc, après un autre live documenté sur l’indispensable Live at Massey Hall 1971 et publié en 2007. Des prestations issues de son Journey Through the Past Solo Tour. Sur son site, le vieux bison canadien n’hésite pas à déclarer que ce Young Shakespeare est supérieur à Massey Hall, le trouvant plus calme, moins flashy car capté dans un lieu moins prestigieux que Massey Hall, justement. Pour Neil Young, il s’agirait carrément du « meilleur de tous les temps car il définit cette époque. » Remarque plus que judicieuse tant les thèmes des chansons mêlent ici les rêves et les cauchemars des gens de sa génération (il a alors 26 ans). La qualité du tracklisting aide aussi à rendre mythique cet album, et sa simple lecture dresse les poils, direct ! Tell Me Why, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done, Ohio, Dance Dance Dance, Cowgirl in the Sand, A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold, Journey Through the Past, Don’t Let It Bring You Down, Helpless, Down by the River et Sugar Mountain sont ici habillés par la guitare ou le piano d’un Neil Young chantant à la perfection.
