Le premier album d’Amanda Palmer, moitié du duo cabaret rock The Dresden Dolls, doit son titre au récit en forme d’auto-fiction, faisant au passage un clin d’œil à la série TV Twin Peaks. Il échappe cependant à l’écueil de l’album concept pouvant alourdir le propos, et se compose d’une douzaine de titres divisés en deux actes.
En laissant de côté l’argument fictionnel pour ne s’intéresser qu’à la musique, l’album ne perd rien de sa saveur et de sa singularité : la palette des ambiances pop/rock est fournie entre ballades mélodramatiques (juste ce qu’il faut) et titres plus rentre-dedans avec un piano omniprésent tenu par les mains expertes du compositeur et producteur Ben Folds. Who Killed Amanda Palmer a ses grands moments, portés par la voix à fleur de peau étonnament proche du timbre de Patti Smith – la déchirure punk en moins. « Astronaut : A Short History of Nearly Nothing » en a le souffle coupé, « Runs in the Family » et son débit rapide, le doux « Blake Says » et le récit mystérieux de « Strength Through Music » (featuring le dramaturge Strindberg et l’émule Ben Folds), ou le cristallin « What’s the Use of Wond’rin » avec la voix aérienne d’Annie Clark alias St. Vincent.
Avec ce disque insolite, Amanda Palmer fait montre d’un talent original et constructif capable de durer sur la longueur d’un album. La marque d’un vrai talent.
