Avec Urban Hymns qui parait en septembre 1997 en pleine tempête Britpop, The Verve apporte luxe, élégance et sophistication. Tout est là, dans l’imparable single Bittersweet Symphony et son tout aussi imparable sample de cordes d’une reprise de The Last Time des Rolling Stones ! Une approche musicale raffinée qui n’empêche jamais la bande de Richard Ashcroft de faire de la vraie pop. Mais en version sophistiquée, dorée à l’or fin d’arrangements divins. Quelques violons par-ci, quelques ballades par-là. Tout est soupesé avec goût dans le troisième album du groupe formé à Wigan sept ans plus tôt. Il y a bien sur la voix d’Ashcroft qui hypnotise l’ouïe d’un bout à l’autre du disque. Et surtout des thèmes redoutables aux mélodies entêtantes (Sonnet, The Drugs Don’t Work, Lucky Man…). Dans ses postures romantiques, Urban Hymns est un album presque dandy assez insurpassable qui traverse le temps avec une grande aisance. Cette Super Deluxe Edition de 5CD destinée à souffler ses vingt bougies est évidemment blindées de bonus et de raretés. Faces B, remixes, alternate takes, séances à la BBC et même de nombreux titres live dont un fameux concert de mai 1998 à l’Haigh Hall de leur ville natale devant 35.000 fans ! © MZ

Avec Urban Hymns qui parait en septembre 1997 en pleine tempête Britpop, The Verve apporte luxe, élégance et sophistication. Tout est là, dans l’imparable single Bittersweet Symphony et son tout aussi imparable sample de cordes d’une reprise de The Last Time des Rolling Stones ! Une approche musicale raffinée qui n’empêche jamais la bande de Richard Ashcroft de faire de la vraie pop. Mais en version sophistiquée, dorée à l’or fin d’arrangements divins. Quelques violons par-ci, quelques ballades par-là. Tout est soupesé avec goût dans le troisième album du groupe formé à Wigan sept ans plus tôt. Il y a bien sur la voix d’Ashcroft qui hypnotise l’ouïe d’un bout à l’autre du disque. Et surtout des thèmes redoutables aux mélodies entêtantes (Sonnet, The Drugs Don’t Work, Lucky Man…). Dans ses postures romantiques, Urban Hymns est un album presque dandy assez insurpassable qui traverse le temps avec une grande aisance. Cette Super Deluxe Edition de 5CD destinée à souffler ses vingt bougies est évidemment blindées de bonus et de raretés. Faces B, remixes, alternate takes, séances à la BBC et même de nombreux titres live dont un fameux concert de mai 1998 à l’Haigh Hall de leur ville natale devant 35.000 fans ! © MZ
