Le sixième album des Flaming Lips, dans lequel se fait le plus sentir l’influence de l’acid rock hérité des années 60, notamment anglais et plus particulièrement Syd Barrett.
Collages, effets spéciaux, morceaux enchaînés, un psychédélisme bourré d’influences, original à défaut d’être nouveau. L’ambiance reste pop, comme en témoigne le hit « She Don’t Use Jelly » qui dénote sur le reste des compositions, non seulement par sa structure mais aussi par son texte « coquin pour ados ».
Le nouveau batteur Steve Drozd s’avère aussi un multi instrumentiste doué, et le nouveau guitariste Ronald Jones remplit plus d’espace. Le riff de claviers entêtant du bruyant « Pilot Can At The Queer Of God » est assez bien trouvé, tandis qu’un écho des Beatles (« I Am The Walrus ») décore « Superhumans » et le cajoleur « Chew In The Apple of Your Eye » se décompose vite pour dérouter l’auditeur !
