Même s’il est livré en février 2004, le premier album de Kanye West a commencé à prendre forme dès 1999. Cinq années auront été nécessaires au rappeur d’Atlanta pour enfanter ce College Dropout, véritable secousse sismique sur une planète rap qui, à sa sortie, ronronne ou ne pense qu’à Eminem et ses clones… Kanye West n’est pourtant pas un bleu lorsqu’il débarque avec ce disque protéiforme et dense. Depuis le milieu des années 90, le bonhomme s’est fait un nom comme beatmaker et producteur, notamment aux côtés de Jay-Z et des poulains de son label Roc-A-Fella. Mais son envie démesurée de réussir et surtout de voir (très) grand l’a incité à prendre son temps. Le résultat est flamboyant et mêle aussi bien rap pour puristes que tradition soul, funk et gospel.
