Avec Sweetheart of the rodeo, Roger Mc Guinn apporte une nouvelle fois le preuve de son étonnante faculté à rebondir. Resté seul avec Chris Hillman suite au départ de Michael Clarke en 1968, il s’apprête à travailler dans la veine de leurs précédents albums. Ils font appel à Kevin Kelley, à la batterie, et surtout à Gram Parsons, aux guitares et au chant. C’est ce dernier qui va donner au groupe une impulsion nouvelle et résolument country, les Byrds n’ayant pourtant aucune expérience particulière de ce style à part quelques influences dans la période des débuts.

Soit… l’album est tout de même enregistré et le résultat est des plus étonnants, le groupe réussit une alliance dont lui seul a le secret (plus pour très longtemps) et lance le country rock. Avec « You Ain’t Goin' Nowhere », ou « Nothing Was Delivered », des chansons de Dylan complètement revisitées, le pas est allègrement franchis entre folk music et country, deux genres dont ont avait presque oublié qu’ils étaient cousins. Les airs traditionnels issus de la vieille Amérique comme « I’m a Pilgrim », et les standards comme « Pretty Boy Floyd » de Woody Guthrie sont repris avec un tel respect que l’on croirait des compositions originales. Le son, restant dans l’esprit country est bel et bien nouveau.

Sweetheart of the Rodeo, qui ne s’adresse ni vraiment aux rockers, ni vraiment aux cow-boys, n’est pas un grand succès commercial, qu’importe, même si l’exercice de renouveau se trouve être ici un peu plus consensuel, c’est une nouvelle voie qui est indéniablement ouverte par Mc Guinn… et Parsons.
