Alors que les jeunes punks captent toutes les caméras, les Rolling Stones se rappellent à leur bon souvenir avec Some Girls, prouvant que l’heure de l’Ehpad n’a pas encore sonné pour eux. Avec sa grandiose pochette signée Peter Corriston, déjà auteur de celle du Physical Graffiti de Led Zep, l’album paru en juin 1978 est avant tout le retour aux affaires de Keith Richards, qui avait un peu trop laissé la barre au showman Mick Jagger sur It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (1974) et Black & Blue (1976). Le riff humain transcende alors certaines chansons de ce disque inespéré. When the Whip Comes Down, Some Girls, Lies, Respectable, Before They Make Me Run, Shattered sans oublier l’immense Beast of Burden prouvent surtout que le rock’n’roll basique peut encore exister entre la révolution punk et le tsunami disco qui a recouvert tous les dancefloors de la planète. Quoique, même dans ce domaine, leur tubesque Miss You remplit sa mission boule à facettes. Et pour parfaire cet éclectisme, Ron Wood sort même la pedal steel sur Far Away Eyes, délicieuse parenthèse country sans gras.
