Beaucoup se souviennent du premier S&M (Symphony and Metallica) paru en 1999, les Four Horsemen y reprenaient leurs plus grands classiques avec l’Orchestre symphonique de San Francisco. Cette première itération était dirigée par Michael Kamen et avait été saluée autant par la critique que par les fans. La demande pour une seconde expérience du même acabit était énorme et est enfin devenue réalité en 2019. Dirigés cette fois-ci par Michael Tilson Thomas, l’Orchestre symphonique de San Francisco et Metallica proposent une vision plus épurée que celle choisie par Kamen vingt ans plus tôt. Au lieu d’ajouter de nombreuses couches de cuivres et de cordes comme l’avait fait Kamen, Tilson Thomas utilise vraiment l’orchestre dans le but de soutenir la musique des Californiens plutôt que de l’envelopper, conservant ainsi la sève des morceaux originaux, qui gagnent en intensité. Nous sommes vraiment face à une union entre deux univers et le sentiment de superposition du premier S&M disparaît. 

L’ouverture sur Ecstacy of Gold (Ennio Morricone) est grandiloquente et permet d’introduire l’instrumental Call of Ktulu avec une maestria presque jubilatoire. Metallica ne se prive pas non plus de s’aventurer dans des terres plus acoustiques (le groupe devenant de plus en plus enclin à revisiter ses morceaux dans des tonalités différentes) laissant James Hetfield et l’orchestre nous transporter dans une ambiance presque aérienne comme sur All Within My Hands

Pas seulement dans un rôle de faire-valoir, l’Orchestre de San Francisco met Metallica à son service pour des interprétations pertinentes et agréables de la Suite scythe de Serge Prokofiev (Tchoujbog et La Danse des esprits noirs) et The Iron Foundry Opus 19 (Alexander Mosolov). D’excellents choix qui parviennent à saisir à la gorge, à transmettre une ambiance des plus étonnantes. (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, instrumental composé et joué à l’origine par le regretté bassiste Cliff Burton, est ici repris par le contrebassiste Scott Pingel, seul, pour ce qui est le plus grand moment de ce concert. 

On peut regretter que Metallica n’ait pas omis certains classiques qui se prêtent moins à l’exercice, pour se laisser totalement aller à une proposition logique et plus profonde. S&M 2 surprend et émeut mais frustre aussi parfois. Les Four Horsemen semblent déterminés à vouloir emmener leur catalogue dans des directions surprenantes et se faire plaisir tout en nous faisant plaisir. Descriptif de l'album

Beaucoup se souviennent du premier S&M (Symphony and Metallica) paru en 1999, les Four Horsemen y reprenaient leurs plus grands classiques avec l’Orchestre symphonique de San Francisco. Cette première itération était dirigée par Michael Kamen et avait été saluée autant par la critique que par les fans. La demande pour une seconde expérience du même acabit était énorme et est enfin devenue réalité en 2019. Dirigés cette fois-ci par Michael Tilson Thomas, l’Orchestre symphonique de San Francisco et Metallica proposent une vision plus épurée que celle choisie par Kamen vingt ans plus tôt. Au lieu d’ajouter de nombreuses couches de cuivres et de cordes comme l’avait fait Kamen, Tilson Thomas utilise vraiment l’orchestre dans le but de soutenir la musique des Californiens plutôt que de l’envelopper, conservant ainsi la sève des morceaux originaux, qui gagnent en intensité. Nous sommes vraiment face à une union entre deux univers et le sentiment de superposition du premier S&M disparaît. 

L’ouverture sur Ecstacy of Gold (Ennio Morricone) est grandiloquente et permet d’introduire l’instrumental Call of Ktulu avec une maestria presque jubilatoire. Metallica ne se prive pas non plus de s’aventurer dans des terres plus acoustiques (le groupe devenant de plus en plus enclin à revisiter ses morceaux dans des tonalités différentes) laissant James Hetfield et l’orchestre nous transporter dans une ambiance presque aérienne comme sur All Within My Hands

Pas seulement dans un rôle de faire-valoir, l’Orchestre de San Francisco met Metallica à son service pour des interprétations pertinentes et agréables de la Suite scythe de Serge Prokofiev (Tchoujbog et La Danse des esprits noirs) et The Iron Foundry Opus 19 (Alexander Mosolov). D’excellents choix qui parviennent à saisir à la gorge, à transmettre une ambiance des plus étonnantes. (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, instrumental composé et joué à l’origine par le regretté bassiste Cliff Burton, est ici repris par le contrebassiste Scott Pingel, seul, pour ce qui est le plus grand moment de ce concert. 

On peut regretter que Metallica n’ait pas omis certains classiques qui se prêtent moins à l’exercice, pour se laisser totalement aller à une proposition logique et plus profonde. S&M 2 surprend et émeut mais frustre aussi parfois. Les Four Horsemen semblent déterminés à vouloir emmener leur catalogue dans des directions surprenantes et se faire plaisir tout en nous faisant plaisir. Le trip hop en 10 albums

A l’aube des années 90, la vague trip hop submerge la Grande-Bretagne avec une électro influencée par la musique jamaïcaine et les beats rap. Know your Lemmy

Le 24 décembre 2017, Lemmy Kilmister aurait fêté ses 72 ans, dont plus de 40 à la tête de Motörhead, le groupe de rock'n'roll le plus bruyant de l'histoire. Un cancer foudroyant a finalement emporté celui qui était devenu une icône que l'on croyait immortelle, tant sa disparition avait été maintes fois annoncée puis démentie. Motörhead, qui s'est logiquement éteint avec lui, aura donc traversé quatre décennies avec des hauts et des bas. Et surtout beaucoup de malentendus, sans mauvais jeu de mot en rapport avec la puissance sonore dégagée sur scène...
