C’est un Barbiere « di qualità, di qualità » et même de très grande qualité que Deutsche Grammophon. Enregistré durant l’été 1971 à Londres, c’est une des premières rencontres entre Claudio Abbado et le London Symphony Orchestra. C’est aussi le début des éditions philologiques entreprises par Alberto Zedda des œuvres de Rossini, dont les partitions sont recouvertes par les mauvaises traditions depuis plus d’un siècle. On supprime les ajouts devenus, bien à tort, traditionnels, on rétablit aussi certaines coupures et la fine instrumentation d’époque et, surtout, on chante et on joue sans forcer le trait avec un sens inné du théâtre. Un coup de dépoussiérage qui a donné un coup de jeune à ce chef-d’œuvre composé par un génie de vingt-quatre ans.
Il est tout simplement idéal ce Barbier-là ! Un plateau de rêve avec des chanteurs rompus à ce répertoire. Chacun est à sa place, de la Rosine rouée et coquine de Teresa Berganza, au Figaro raffiné et plein d'abattage de Hermann Prey, en passant par le Comte frivole de Luigi Alva jusqu'au ridiculissime Basilio incarné par l'inénarrable Paolo Montarsolo. On s'amuse de cette drôlerie et on admire une fois de plus l'implacable machine si bien huilée du théâtre rossinien sous la baguette sans cesse inventive et frémissante de Claudio Abbado. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Descriptif de l'album

C’est un Barbiere « di qualità, di qualità » et même de très grande qualité que Deutsche Grammophon. Enregistré durant l’été 1971 à Londres, c’est une des premières rencontres entre Claudio Abbado et le London Symphony Orchestra. C’est aussi le début des éditions philologiques entreprises par Alberto Zedda des œuvres de Rossini, dont les partitions sont recouvertes par les mauvaises traditions depuis plus d’un siècle. On supprime les ajouts devenus, bien à tort, traditionnels, on rétablit aussi certaines coupures et la fine instrumentation d’époque et, surtout, on chante et on joue sans forcer le trait avec un sens inné du théâtre. Un coup de dépoussiérage qui a donné un coup de jeune à ce chef-d’œuvre composé par un génie de vingt-quatre ans.
Il est tout simplement idéal ce Barbier-là ! Un plateau de rêve avec des chanteurs rompus à ce répertoire. Chacun est à sa place, de la Rosine rouée et coquine de Teresa Berganza, au Figaro raffiné et plein d'abattage de Hermann Prey, en passant par le Comte frivole de Luigi Alva jusqu'au ridiculissime Basilio incarné par l'inénarrable Paolo Montarsolo. On s'amuse de cette drôlerie et on admire une fois de plus l'implacable machine si bien huilée du théâtre rossinien sous la baguette sans cesse inventive et frémissante de Claudio Abbado. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Comment ça, vous ne connaissez pas (encore) Mason Bates ? C’est pourtant l’un des noms les plus présents sur la scène nord-américaine. Né en 1977, Bates est à la fois compositeur, surtout symphoniste et lyrique, et DJ de musique électronique (sous l'alias DJ Masonic) – deux pôles apparemment opposés mais qu’il se fait un malin plaisir à mêler. Ainsi, environ la moitié de son œuvre symphonique et lyrique comporte, d’une manière ou d’une autre, des sonorités électroniques, pour la plupart des sons « de tous les jours », préenregistrés et restitués en temps réel à mesure de la partition. A l’occasion de la sortie de son génial opéra The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, Qobuz s’est entretenu avec ce personnage hors-norme.

Dans la peau de Debussy : le chemin de croix vers l’Opéra-Comique

Automne 1895 : Claude Debussy a fini d’écrire “Pelléas et Mélisande”. Il reste maintenant à créer cet opéra révolutionnaire sur les planches. Mais lesquelles ? Ce seront finalement celles de l’Opéra-Comique. Mais entre reports, retards et leçons de piano – pour s’assurer un maigre revenu –, la transposition sur scène fut un long chemin de croix pour Debussy. Episode 2.

Maria Callas "dal vivo"

D’une portée vertigineuse, le legs discographique de Maria Callas est d’autant plus stupéfiant que ses gravures d’opéras en studio se firent en à peine une décennie : pas moins de vingt-quatre intégrales enregistrées entre 1952 et 1960 (mais la plupart dans les années 1953–1957), complétées à Paris, où elle venait de s’installer, de Carmen (1964) et d’une seconde Tosca (1965) — aux intégrales répondant de célèbres disques récitals. L’ensemble a fait l’objet en 2014, au terme d’une remasterisation exemplaire d’après les bandes mères, d’un nouveau et somptueux coffret Warner Classics. Nous reproduisons ici, avec l'aimable autorisation de Warner Music le texte introductif de Michel Roubinet qui figure dans le livret du coffret Maria Callas Live.
