Publié au printemps 2018, Pops Is Tops: The Verve Studio Albums comprend sur 4 CD I’ve Got the World on a String, Louis Under the Stars (tous deux avec l’orchestre de Russ Garcia), A Day With Satchmo et Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson avec, pour chaque album, des bonus tracks de rigueur. Une somme captée en quelques jours lors de sessions d’août et octobre 1957. A cette époque, Armstrong est déjà considéré comme l’un des plus importants musiciens de son siècle. Même sa discographie est pantagruélique. Ces disques ont été enregistrés dans la foulée de ceux en duo avec Ella Fitzgerald, Norman Granz vient de prendre la direction du label Verve, et c’est lui qui chapeaute ces sessions. Le grand producteur a l’intelligence de mettre dans les pattes de la star des musiciens virtuoses – grand orchestre ou petite formation – et un répertoire cinq étoiles pour que son chant comme ses solos se retrouvent dans un contexte inégalé.
