Parking Lot Symphony, son premier album sur Blue Note, a beau s’ouvrir sur un chant funèbre, la cuvée 2017 de Troy Andrews alias Trombone Shorty n’a rien de la longue complainte… Si le souffleur a choisi d’ouvrir les hostilités par ce Laveau Dirge N°.1, célébration de ses racines avec ce superbe morceau de soul 100% New Orleans en l’honneur d’une des plus célèbres prêtresses vaudou de l’histoire de la Nouvelle-Orléans, c’est pour ensuite s’aventurer dans des directions totalement diverses. Comme son titre le laisse présager, Parking Lot Symphony est un album aux sonorités plus que variées. Fiesta de fanfare, funk torride, blues déchirant, morceau de hip-hop bravache et ballade soul, rien ne manque à l’appel de ce kaléidoscope reflétant l’éclectisme musical de Big Easy et de son ambassadeur Trombone Shorty. Un enregistrement auquel ont participé des compositeurs et des musiciens aussi différents qu’Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, les Meters, Better Than Ezra ou encore Dumpstaphunk. C’est toutefois seul chez lui que Trombone Shorty a commencé à imaginer ce Parking Lot Symphony. « Je me trouvais pour deux semaines à la maison alors j’en ai profité pour me rendre au studio et préparer mon aire de jeu. J’ai tout disposé en cercle, tuba, trombone, trompette, clavier, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, orgue Hammond, guitare, basse, batterie, et je me suis mis au milieu… J’ai enregistré suffisamment d’idées pour remplir un album puis j’ai mis le projet entre parenthèses pendant un an pour repartir sur la route et voir comment ses idées évolueraient… » Le résultat est un disque-portrait de son auteur. Mais aussi une belle carte musicale de New Orleans lorgnant tant vers le passé (avec les puissantes reprises de Here Comes The Girls d’Allen Toussaint et de It Ain’t No Use des Meters joué à la guitare par Leo Nocentelli, LE guitariste des Meters) que le futur. © CM/Qobuz
