On and On est un second album brillant. Les fans apprécieront les ballades apaisantes et les charmes du garçon ordinaire, sans jamais aller gratter la surface des chansons. Le producteur Mario Caldato Jr. aiguise les ondes optimistes de Johnson et polit ses guitares acoustiques, tandis que le musicien continue à affûter son mélange de genres. Johnson sait aussi être sérieux ; il disserte allègrement sur la dépendance maladive aux choses matérielles de l'Amérique ("Gone") et sa rancœur inconsciente envers la jeunesse actuelle ("Cookie Jar"). Il n'a pas besoin d'être agressif pour se faire comprendre, les ventes de Brushfire Fairytales parlent d'elles-mêmes. Les gens écoutent le commentaire musical de Jack Johnson parce qu'il se met à leur niveau. En période difficile, Jack Johnson est lumineux, et ça fait toujours du bien.
