Enregistré en mars 1997 sur le label ECM, Nine To Get Ready est la première participation du saxophoniste Roscoe Mitchell avec le Note Factory. Cet album marque le retour de l’Américain sur le label ECM, 15 ans après Third Decade avec l’Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Sur cet album, Roscoe Mitchell réalise un rêve créatif qui lui est cher. Réunir des musiciens du monde de l’improvisation à un orchestre. L’alchimie prend très vite dans les limbes de « Leola » ou dans l’inattendu « Hop Hip Bip Bir Rip ».
«For Lester B » est paradoxalement très harmonieux. A lui seul, ce titre semble raconter l’histoire du jazz avec un rythme lancinant et hypnotique. Roscoe Mitchell dévoile dans cet album tout son savoir faire de compositeur et d’improvisateur, entouré de l’ensemble Note Factory dans lequel on retrouve Tani Tabbal à la percussion, son complice de 30 ans.
L’album se termine en hommage avec une reprise de l’Art Ensemble of Chicago « Big Red Peaches » électrique et endiablée.
