La grande vague baroqueuse « historiquement renseignée » qui est venue bouleverser, et souvent balayer, nos habitudes d’écoute, ne doit cependant pas nous faire oublier des mozartiens aussi essentiels que Bruno Walter, George Szell ou Karl Böhm. Le cas d’Herbert von Karajan est un peu différent, car sa vision plutôt hédoniste des Symphonies de Mozart a toujours divisé la critique comme le public. Enregistré à la fin des années 1970 à Berlin, cet album propose les six dernières symphonies auxquelles Karajan a ajouté les Symphonies n° 29, 32 et 33. Quant à la Symphonie n° 37, K. 444/425, elle est comme toujours aux abonnés absents, puisque Mozart n’a fait que retoucher une symphonie de son ami Michael Haydn et lui ajouter un prélude, en vue d’un concert qu’il devait diriger à Linz en 1783. S’ils sont marqués du sceau d’un temps révolu par leur épaisseur sonore, voire leur excès de romantisme ou bien encore leur legato systématique et leur effectif pléthorique, ces enregistrements ne manquent pourtant ni de vigueur ni de charme grâce aux sonorités envoûtantes du Philharmonique de Berlin et à la virtuosité sans faille du pupitre de cordes. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Herbert von Karajan et les grands maîtres du classique

Trente ans après sa mort, l’Autrichien Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 - Anif 1989) incarne toujours la figure du chef d’orchestre. À la tête de l’orchestre philharmonique de Berlin, qu’il a élevé au rang de marque mondiale pendant presque trente-cinq ans (1955-1989), il a méthodiquement réenregistré le cœur de son répertoire : Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss…

Julius Katchen, 50 nuances de Brahms

Si les pianistes de notre époque, toutes générations confondues, enregistrent la musique pour piano de Brahms à tour de doigts – surtout les derniers opus, 116 à 119, qui ont la cote –, il n’en a pas toujours été ainsi. Lorsque le pianiste américain Julius Katchen commence ses enregistrements brahmsiens en 1962, il signe pour Decca la toute première intégrale des œuvres pour clavier du compositeur allemand. Il sera suivi une dizaine d’années plus tard par celle de l’Allemand Peter Rösel, et, plus récemment, d’une douzaine de pianistes.
