Miss E… So Addictive est avant tout l’album d’un single – un titre unique, mutant, monstrueux : « Get Ur Freak On », improbable série de breaks incongrus, de rythmiques concassées et de vocaux hirsutes, que domine un gimmick minimaliste et inquiétant, sur fond de tablas et de nappes de synthés saturés de plus en plus menaçantes.
A côté de ce morceau proprement époustouflant, qui reste l’un des moments les plus forts de la musique populaire du début des années 2000, le reste de l’album fait forcément pâle figure. On ne peut pas dire pour autant qu’il démérite : entre productions électro-futuristes destructurées (« One Minute Man », « Lick Shots »), hommage au funk des années 1970 (« Old School Joint »), ballade R&B rehaussée de vocoder (« Take Away ») et virée dancefloor (« 4 My People »), Missy Elliott et Timbaland varient les plaisirs…
Et pourtant, dans cette succession trop longue, mais globalement réussie, d’instantanés hip-hop/R&B, on ne trouve rien qui soit aussi fou et aussi… addictif que « Get Ur Freak On ». Ce qui fait de cet album, écrasé par le poids d’un seul morceau, un exemple assez rare de disque tout à la fois totalement déséquilibré – et rigoureusement indispensable.
