Cet album des deux opéras de Ravel enregistrés au début des années soixante a valeur de mythe. Les chanteurs, tous francophones, sont parfaitement distribués et la direction de Lorin Maazel à la tête de l'Orchestre National de France (de la R.T.F. à l'époque) est un modèle de transparence, de tendresse, d'humour, de précision. Dans L'Heure espagnole, les rimes cocasses de Franc Nohain avec leurs sous-entendus souvent salaces font mouche à tout coup. Ravel a caché toutes les peurs et les espoirs de son âme inquiète dans L'Enfant et les sortilèges qui trouve là (avec l'enregistrement d'Ansermet enregistré quelques années plus tôt pour Decca) une réalisation à la hauteur de ses exigences vocales et stylistiques.
