Le dixième album studio de Devendra Banhart est un paradoxe des plus poétique. Plaisir et peine, lumière et obscurité, envol métaphysique et ancrage physique… Toutes les paires se combinent pour un résultat qui allie la légèreté de Kings Of Convenience à la morosité du Velvet Underground. Comme à son habitude, l’Américano-Vénézuélien maîtrise les ambivalences stylistiques (bossa-nova, soft rock, folk chambriste, dream pop…) et linguistiques (il chante en anglais et en espagnol), au service de rêveries sur le thème de la maternité, de la mort, de l’amitié ou des origines. L’esprit minimaliste de son précédent album Ape in Pink Marble (2016) fait place à des arrangements raffinés, notamment sur le superbe duo de Will I See You Tonight ? avec la grande Vashti Bunyan. La réunion entre cette véritable matriarche du folk et son fils spirituel donne tout son sens au titre du disque : Ma, c’est non seulement une narration intime par un excellent crooner, mais aussi un hommage filial en toute dignité et élégance. © Alexis Renaudat/Qobuz

Le dixième album studio de Devendra Banhart est un paradoxe des plus poétique.
