Sinon le meilleur disque de la dame (la course à handicap était perdue d’avance et comment contrebalancer l’aura de Lady Day ?), Lady Sings the Blues échappe a priori à tout commentaire critique. Car le rôle de Billie Holiday vaut à l’écran la seule nomination de la chanteuse aux Oscars (et l’une des rares au bénéfice d’une artiste noire) pour une performance que seule la mauvaise foi pouvait contester.



Et parce que la Terre entière est sidérée de l’aplomb de l’ex-membre des Supremes à embrasser l’évocation de la vie d’une chanteuse aux antipodes de son propre parcours. Soulignant au crayon gras le gouffre séparant la plus grande chanteuse de jazz – amoureuse jusqu’à la destruction, passionnée jusqu’à la déchéance, investie jusqu’à la névrose – du plus parfait produit de la musique populaire de la deuxième moitié du XXème siècle (quelque chose d’insondable), critiques et fans énamourés ont abordé ce disque au lance-flammes... et se sont vus contraints de rengainer leurs armes.



En trente-cinq thèmes (répondent naturellement à l’appel la noria de standards, de « The Man I Love » à « Fine and Mellow », en passant par « Lover Man »), Diana Ross aborde en effet l’épreuve avec une pertinence et une intelligence inouïes, ne tentant pas une seconde de déglutir un à la manière de qui l’aurait exposé aux sanctions les plus acerbes.



C’est bien davantage de climat et d’esprit dont il s’agit ici, parfaitement captés et rendus dans la dimension tragique de ce destin brisé. Et c’est bien de justice immanente dont on parle lorsqu’on considère qu’a priori et en toute morale, la prestation de Diana Ross constitue l’intérêt majeur de l’aventure. Ici, Ernie Watts souffle dans son saxophone, Michel Legrand conduit les cordes et Berry Gordy, manifestement dépassé par la majesté de l’événement, produit.



L’album atteindra la première place des charts pop et la… deuxième position des classements de musique noire, ce qui complète l’éclairage inédit de l’aventure.
