Finalement, être considéré comme le plus grand disque de jazz de tous les temps n’est guère aisé. On en oublierait presque d’en écouter vraiment son contenu… Le casting évidemment impressionne. A ses côtés, Miles Davis est entouré de ce que chaque instrument compte de solistes révolutionnaires. Bill Evans d’abord. Le pianiste qui apporte sa culture classique est au fond le co-auteur de cette réussite. Ensemble, ils développent un jazz de l’épure qui s’éloigne des acrobaties harmoniques du be bop. Sans pyrotechnie, ce jazz modal est aussi embrassé par les saxophones de John Coltrane et Cannonball Adderley, deux souffles longs en bouche, d’une sensualité folle. Adossée à la rythmique du batteur Jimmy Cobb et du contrebassiste Paul Chambers, cette réunion d’esthètes offre surtout au jazz des habits d’un raffinement extrême. © MZ
